5 CLASS SESSION • Saturday morning • 10am - 11:30am + ONE PRIVATE CUTTING SESSION
October 26th - November 23rd
This class is held at Vecina, 540 Biden Street, Downtown Scranton.
Class size is limited to 4 people and is designed to start at 16 years old.
You will be provided with a JUKI HZL-353Z home machine for all classes. If you have your own machine, you can schedule a private lesson if you would like to learn how to use it. Because sewing machines can be finicky (and difficult & challenging) at times, the only personal machine students can use is a newly purchased JUKI HZL-353Z.
PRIVATE LESSON FOR CUTTING - 5 classes will be spent sewing as a group. One class will be a private lesson focusing on cutting. Each student can schedule a 1-hour class at my store for a private lesson. This is included in the class registration fee. I have found that students can struggle more with cutting than sewing! We will have a chance to figure out the best way of cutting for you, which can make sewing so much more enjoyable!
Your lesson can be scheduled after the first class and will need to be completed by Class #3 so you will be ready for the upcoming classes.
STUDIO TIME - Your 2-hour session will provide you with a wonderful opportunity to use the same Juki machine you use in class, a 4' x 6' industrial cutting table and industrial steam iron, and all of the pressing tools. I also have a self-healing mat, marking tools, and rulers available for use.
Sewing 101 is a 5-part series designed specifically for beginners. This class is perfect for anyone who has little or no sewing experience as well as those who have not sewn for years and need a good refresher.
The goal of the class is to have everyone become comfortable with the machine, learn how to sew and learn techniques you can build upon for your sewing journey! It's a learning class and not just a project-based class.
Considering we are making projects – I want them to be fashionable and functional and something you will be very proud of using. You will learn techniques to make your projects look professional and not homemade. I will also share production tips and tricks I have learned from years in the industry.
Students provide sewing tools and most materials.
Tools: You will need just the basics to help keep the cost low. You will need some sort of cutting scissors or shears. Please buy new ones, they will make your life so much easier. I will also show you how to use a rotary cutter with a self-healing pad. You will need to provide pins and or clips. I also have a variety of rulers and tape measures to use. If you have your own, please bring them. I will also send you a list of sewing supplies you may want to purchase, but not necessary.
Materials: You will need to provide certain materials for your projects and I will provide some for others, this is to keep it simpler for you and save you time and maybe a little frustration!
TRIANGLE BAG: You will provide the fabric. The sample I made is in linen, it's very drapey and has a beautiful look. Linen is a little tricky to sew for a beginner, but I wanted to show you the possibilities! Other fabrics that would work well are any cotton, solids or fun prints, a soft canvas, lightweight denim, and corduroy. Depending on the width of the fabric you will need just under 2 yards for the outside and the same for the lining.
HEADBAND: You will provide the fabric. I will supply the hair elastics. Good fabric choices are any cotton solids or prints. Depending on the width of the fabric just over 1/4 yard is required.
ZIPPER POUCH: I will provide the canvas the sample is made of, and I will also provide the zipper, the lining is made of linen.
Patterns: I will make the patterns and is yours to keep after the session.
CLASS 1: Machine - We jump right in, I will teach you how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, and use the stitch selector. You will start sewing straight lines and corners, back tacking, making seams, and top-stitching. I will provide you with practice fabric. There is always time for Q&A and I will also give some pointers about which fabrics and tools to buy.
CLASS 2: Twisted Fabric Headband - You will learn to sew a twisted fabric headband using all the techniques you have learned so far. We will also cover the importance of pressing while sewing, which is also part of the art form of creating a beautiful, finished product. Laying out the pattern and learning about fabric terminology will be discussed.
CLASS 3: Triangle Bag - We will start the triangle bag and it will probably take more than Class 3 to finish; we will finish it in Class 4.
CLASS 4: Zipper Pouch - We will work on finishing the triangle bag and will start the zipper pouch. The pouch will be fully lined and will have a metal zipper. We will learn how to set a zipper with a "zipper foot", which will be provided.
CLASS 5: We will finish strong with the most difficult project, the canvas zipper pouch. Congratulations! If there is additional time during the last class we will have an open teaching, learning, question and answer session. Ask me about a new project that you would like to start!
CANCELLATION POLICY: If you cannot attend, I can provide you with a credit of $210 which you can use toward future sewing classes. It will only be provided if you notify me 72 hours in advance by emailing jamesena@vecinadesign.com. There must also be a class waitlist so I can fill your spot. By registering for the class, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy. There are no refunds.
I do not offer no-cost, make-up classes for missed classes. If you would like to schedule a 90 minute make-up class there will be a $65 private lesson fee.
