LEARN TO SEW WITH CONFIDENCE
Sewing 101 is a 5-part series designed specifically for beginners. It is perfect if you have little or no sewing experience, or if you haven't sewn in years and need a refresher.
This is not just a project-based class. The goal is to teach you the fundamentals of sewing so you become comfortable with your machine, understand basic sewing techniques, and develop skills you can continue to build on throughout your sewing journey.
And because we're making projects, I want them to be fashionable, functional, and something you will be proud to use. You'll learn techniques that give your projects a polished, professional finish—not a homemade look.
I'll also share production tips and tricks I've learned throughout my years working in the fashion industry.
YOUR SEWING MACHINE
A JUKI HZL-353Z home sewing machine will be provided for every class.
If you already own a sewing machine and would like to learn how to use it, you can schedule a private lesson.
Because sewing machines can be finicky—and sometimes downright challenging—the only personal machine permitted in this class is a newly purchased JUKI HZL-353Z.
WHAT YOU'LL MAKE
TWISTED FABRIC HEADBAND
You'll make a stylish fabric headband while learning basic sewing techniques, proper pressing, pattern layout, and fabric terminology.
You provide: approximately ¼ yard of fabric. Cotton solids and prints work beautifully. Fat quarters and fabric quarters are perfect for this project, and matching "all purpose" or "everyday thread" in 100% polyester
I provide: hair elastics
TRIANGLE BAG
You'll create a fashionable and functional triangle bag while learning how to read a pattern, lay out fabric, cut accurately, and construct a finished-quality project.
Good fabric choices include:
- Cotton solids or prints
- Soft canvas
- Lightweight denim
- Corduroy
Depending on fabric width, you'll need 1 yard for the outside and 1 yard for the lining.
You provide: fabric and matching "all purpose" or "everyday thread" in 100% polyester
CANVAS ZIPPER POUCH
We'll finish the series with a lined canvas zipper pouch featuring a contrasting interior and metal zipper.. You'll learn how to install a zipper using a new sewing technique and a zipper foot

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
CLASS 1 • THE SEWING MACHINE
You'll learn how to:
- Thread your machine
- Wind a bobbin
- Use the stitch selector
- Sew straight lines and corners
- Backstitch
- Create seams
- Topstitch
I provide all of the tools and fabric for this class, no need to worry about bringing anything! We'll also discuss which fabrics and tools are best to purchase. I will also email a detailed supplies list and fabric sources.
CLASS 2 • TWISTED FABRIC HEADBAND
You'll make your twisted fabric headband using the techniques you've learned so far.
We'll also focus on pressing while sewing—an essential part of creating a beautiful, professional-looking finished product.
You'll learn about:
- Pattern layout
- Fabric terminology
- Proper pressing techniques
- Construction techniques
CLASS 3 • CUTTING + TRIANGLE BAG
Cutting fabric is a skill in itself, so we'll spend approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour learning how to properly cut your triangle bag.
You'll learn how to:
- Read a pattern
- Understand sewing terminology
- Lay out a pattern
- Cut fabric accurately
Then we'll begin constructing the triangle bag, which we'll finish in Class 4.
CLASS 4 • FINISHING THE TRIANGLE BAG + ZIPPER INTRODUCTION
We'll finish your triangle bag and begin learning the process of making the zipper pouch.
You'll learn how to use the zig-zag stitch to finish fabric edges and begin working with a zipper and zipper foot.
CLASS 5 • CANVAS ZIPPER POUCH • THIS CLASS IS FROM 6PM - 8:30PM.
We'll finish strong with our most challenging project—the canvas zipper pouch!
You'll learn how to set a metal zipper using a zipper foot and complete your finished pouch.
Congratulations—you made it through zipper setting!
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
SEWING TOOLS
Students provide most of their basic sewing tools.
You'll need:

Cutting scissors or shears — please purchase new ones if possible! Good scissors will make your sewing experience so much easier.
- Pins
- Any rulers or tape measures you already own
I have a variety of rulers and tape measures available for students to use.
I'll also demonstrate how to use a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat.
Before class begins, I'll send you a list of additional sewing supplies you may want to purchase. These are suggestions, not requirements.
MATERIALS
Students provide fabric for some projects, while I provide materials for others.
Detailed fabric requirements are listed under each project above.
Patterns are provided by me and are yours to keep.
CLASS SIZE
Class size is limited to 4 students so you receive plenty of individual instruction and hands-on guidance.
This small-class format allows me to work directly with each student and make sure you're comfortable with the techniques before moving on.
CANCELLATION POLICY
If you are unable to attend the class, I can provide a $250 class credit toward a future sewing class only if all of the following conditions are met:

- There is a waitlist and I am able to fill your spot.
By registering for the class, you agree to this cancellation policy.
There are no refunds.
MISSED CLASSES
I do not offer complimentary make-up classes for missed sessions.
If you'd like to make up a missed class, you may schedule a 90-minute private lesson for $95.
