Class size is limited to 6 people and is designed to start at 16 years old. 

SKILL LEVEL

This class is ideal if you’ve taken Beginner Sewing 101 or already know how to sew straight seams, measure accurately, and set a zipper.
A brief zipper refresher will be included, but this is not a beginner zipper class.

CLASS OVERVIEW

In this workshop, we’ll focus on techniques for constructing pouches, finishing interiors, and adding gussets.

You’ll learn three pouch styles:

  • East–West Pouch (blue squares in photos)
  • Flat Pouch (striped pouch in photos)
  • Everyday Pouch (orange chevron in photos)

TECHNIQUES COVERED

Interior finishing methods for all three styles:

  • Fully lined construction
  • Bias-bound seams (unlined)
  • Overlocked / serged / zigzag finishes (unlined)
  • Raw edge finishes (for select fabrics)

ZIPPER TECHNIQUES

You’ll learn to work with:

  • Metal zippers
  • Nylon zippers
  • Molded zippers

You’ll also learn:

  • How to shorten zippers
  • How to sew directly over zippers
  • How to finish zipper ends with tabs

PROJECT MATERIALS

Flat Pouch (same as Beginner Sewing 101)

  • Exterior fabric: 17" × 13" — 1 piece
  • Lining fabric: 17" × 13" — 1 piece (optional)
  • 9" zipper (or 11" if adding tabs)
  • Bias tape not recommended
  • Matching "all purpose" polyester thread

East–West Pouch (gusseted)

  • Exterior fabric: 27" × 23" — 1 piece
  • Lining fabric: 27" × 23" — 1 piece (optional)
  • 10" zipper (or 12" if adding tabs)
  • Bias tape (optional / matching thread if used)
  • Matching "all purpose" polyester thread

Everyday Pouch (gusseted)

  • Exterior fabric: 25" × 14" — 1 piece
  • Lining fabric: 25" × 14" — 1 piece (optional)
  • 8" zipper (or 10" if adding tabs)
  • Bias tape (optional / matching thread if used)
  • Matching "all purpose" polyester thread

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

  • Bias Tape: Purchase 3/8" Double-fold Bias Tape usually sold in a pack of a few yards (each pouch uses less than 1 yard)
  • Fusible Interfacing: Provided
  • Patterns for all 3 styles will be provided

You’re welcome to bring scrap fabric to focus on techniques rather than completing all three pouches.

CLASS 1 will be dedicated to learning zipper and finishing techniques and making one East-West pouch. 

I will send out an email with zipper resources and zipper ordering details. 

MACHINES

A JUKI HZL-353Z sewing machine will be provided for all students.

If you’d like to learn your own machine, private lessons are available. Due to the variability of machines, only newly purchased JUKI HZL-353Z machines may be used in class.

CANCELLATION POLICY

If you cannot attend, a $125 credit will be issued toward a future class if:

  • You provide at least 72 hours’ notice
  • Your spot can be filled from the wait list

MISSED CLASSES

Make-up sessions are not included.
A 90-minute private make-up lesson is available for $95.
