December 15th, 2:00pm - 4:30pm
This class will be held at Vecina, 540 Biden Street, Downtown Scranton.
The workshop size is limited to 4 people and is designed to start at 16 years old.
You will be provided with a JUKI HZL-353Z home machine for all classes. If you have your own machine, you can schedule a private lesson if you would like to learn how to use it. Because sewing machines can be finicky (and difficult & challenging) at times, the only personal machine students can use is a newly purchased JUKI HZL-353Z.
During the workshop you will learn the essential skills required to hem, alter and repair clothing. You will also learn about pressing and will use different pressing tools that will make hemming and altering a breeze!
For alterations, you will learn how to take in the waist, and take in side seams on tops, jackets, dresses and skirts. We will also focus on hemming pants and skirts, with and without lining. We will also do the same for sleeves, with and without lining.
Repairing garments will focus on techniques for repairing tears in the middle of the garment, sewing up ripped seams and zipper repairs.
The workshop also includes real-time pinning and altering your clothing. I will demonstrate on each student and will pin one garment for everyone for an alteration. Next, you will do the pinning on another student, learning by doing! Of course, I will make suggestions and will make sure it's done properly before you cut anything! Then the fun part .... you will be doing the altering and repairing in class.
We will also discuss how to determine whether hand sewing or machine sewing is appropriate based on the type of fabric you are handling and what the alteration or repair is.
I will also cover the "quick way" and the "proper way" to do the alteration. Everyone has different needs and has different ways of doing things, so I will cover it all!
By the end of the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of how to confidently hem, alter, and repair garments.
WHAT TO BRING: All students must bring a few pieces of clean clothing that need altering or repairs. I suggest three pieces, alterations or repairs, or both. The goal is to finish 2 in class and to discuss the third. Bring more for discussion too if there is extra time!
Also, scissors, pins and matching thread. I will supply hand needles, rulers and any other supplies needed.
REQUIREMENTS: BEGINNER'S 101 SEWING or experience sewing on a machine. I will not be teaching how to thread a machine for this workshop.
CANCELLATION POLICY: There are no refunds. If you are unable to attend, I can provide you with a $65 credit that you can use toward a future sewing class. By registering for this workshop, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy.
