6 WEEK SESSION • Wednesday Evenings • 6:00pm - 8pm

May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th

Classes are held at Vecina at 540 Biden Street (former Spruce) in Downtown Scranton. All classes are taught by me, Jamie Durkin, owner of Vecina.

Class size is limited to 4 people and is designed to start at 14 years old.

You will be provided with a JUKI home machine for all classes. If you have your own machine, please let me know as soon as possible so we can discuss the condition and capabilities of your machine.

INTERMEDIATE 103 is a 6-class series designed specifically for someone who has some apparel sewing experience.  This class is perfect for anyone who took the Intermediate 102 - Pinafore Apron class.

Class includes 12 hours of instruction.

I chose the apron for INTERMEDIATE 103 COVERALL because it combines pant and setting sleeve techniques. Buttonholes are always exciting too!

The pattern ranges from XXS- 5X which I am excited to share because no one is left out because of body type. You will learn how to cut a pattern for your size, have a fitting and alter it so your finished coverall will fit perfectly.

As always, the goal of this class is to build upon skills that you already have and to learn techniques that you can build upon for your sewing journey.

WHAT WE WILL COVER

HOW TO USE A SERGER: If you took the Intermediate 102 class you have already used the serger. If not, you will learn how to use serger / overlock machine which will be used to finish the inside seams (no zig-zag or pinking seams in my classes)

STITCHING: Learn the art of sewing curved pattern pieces together. You will do this for the crotch seam and setting in the sleeve. Learning these 2 techniques will allow you to set sleeves on garments and get started with pants & shorts.

POINTED COLLAR: By making the lapel collar you will learn the basics of pointed collar construction.

SIDE SEAM POCKETS: A side seam pocket is a pocket that is on the inside of your pants, sewn into the seam.

BUTTONHOLES: For this class you will select your own buttons and sizes of buttons. The home machines we use has an adjustable buttonhole maker.

SUPPLIES

TOOLS: You will need just the basics to help keep the cost low. You will need some cutting scissors or shears. Please buy new ones, or make sure they are very good at cutting fabric, they will make your life so much easier! You will need to provide pins and or clips. I have a variety of marking pens, chalk and wax available to use.

PATTERNS: You will be using a commercial pattern that is graded to different sizes. You will learn how to cut your size and learn about the markings on the pattern. I will provide the patterns.

FABRIC: Mid-weight cotton is a great choice. Good cotton fabrics are softer denim, canvas and twill. You can get plaids or stripes. When buying fabric just think about what weight you would like to be wearing, it's all up to you!

THREAD: You will supply the thread for sewing the apron. I will provide serger thread.

MATERIALS YOU NEED TO PROVIDE: Matching thread to sew the coverall, good coverall fabric and buttons.

SCHEDULE:

CLASS 1:  We will learn how to lay out the pattern and read the pattern. We will take measurements and you will become familiar with the pattern in your size. We will lay out the pattern and cut the 'muslin garment'. This is a coverall made in an inexpensive cotton fabric to make fitting adjustments. For this exercise we will not be making the collar, making buttonholes or setting in pockets. This is exclusively done to understand how your coverall will fit and what will need to be adjusted for your final garment.

CLASS 2: We will start constructing the muslin coverall.

CLASS 3: Fittings begin. The entire class will observe as everyone does their fitting so you can learn about different alterations and how to make adjustments. We will work on alterations for your coverall by adjusting the paper pattern.

CLASS 4, 5 & 6: Now the real fun begins! We will cut the coverall in the good fabric and get to assembling! Introduction to the serger will be in this class. There is the option to use an industrial serger (very fast & fun!) or a home serger.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If you are unable to attend, I can provide you with a credit of $265 that you can use toward future sewing classes. It will only be provided if you notify me 72 hours in advance by emailing hello@vecinadesign.com. There must also be a waitlist for the class so that I can fill your spot. By registering for the class, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy.
