VISIBLE MENDING • MARCH 28th • 6-8PM • byob

$55.00

Neighbors are uniting and offering a one-night Visible Mending Workshop! The class will be run by Jamie Durkin, Owner of Vecina and Jenn Saunders, owner of Northern Light!

Class will be held at 536 Biden Street at Northern Light Espresso Bare and Cafe

No sewing skills are required! This is an introductory class for all skill levels.

Try your hand at a little hand-sewing using traditional Boro and Sashiko techniques. Boro and Sashiko are forms of stitching that originated in Japan with the purpose of mending clothing with rips and tears. The look and feel of Boro have inspired people around the world to turn their worn-down garments into mini works of art, the beauty comes from the unintentional artistry created from layers of mending.

Traditional Boro uses patches of indigo-dyed fabrics in cotton, linen, and other natural fibers. Recently, it has taken a life of its own and crafters now use bright, colorful textiles and brightly colored threads.

All materials for this class are provided. There will be various sizes of hand needles and there will be an ample supply of scrap fabrics and threads, both colorful and neutral. Marking pens and scissors will be provided. There will also be templates and samples of stitching techniques to inspire and copy.

In this class you will be learning:

  • Different stitches for repairing clothes with decorative stitches
  • Practical stitches for broken seams
  • The best tools and materials for repairing woven garments
  • Each student will create a mending sampler for you to practice the repair techniques
  • There will be a home sewing machine that I will use to do any demonstrations if requested

The class is 2 hours, limited to 8 people and it is a very hands-on DIY approach. The goal is for you to learn very basic techniques and to leave with one beautifully mended garment finished by you! Please bring as many garments as you would like.

If you have any fabrics or materials of your own that you would like to use, please bring them.

Pinterest, Etsy and Instagram are all good sources of inspiration!

This event can be BYOB if interested. If you fancy your coffee with a splash of liquor, consider bringing something for that too.  There will be a barista on staff so that you can order some of your favorite cafe drinks.
